Uncommon Perspective by Mrs. KrejciAs a student myself, I loved going to the library. In grade school and middle school it was the public library and my school library. In high school I expanded to UNO's Criss Library for hours of endless research and then came the internet. Now the world is my library and my hours of learning and reading can take place anywhere...but I still find that a space that offers flexibility, comfort and maybe a latte is right for getting things done. Well we don't have the latte's, but we do have a vision and bit by bit our libraries are becoming that ideal learning space. Beth Holland at Edutopia has a great insight to this movement.
My favorite words are at the end. "When every student has the potential to carry a global library on the device in his or her pocket, the role of physical libraries may become even more important, not just a place to house resources, but one in which to create meaning from them." WHAT ARE 21ST CENTURY SKILLS?We hear this phrase often, but what does it really mean? For students at Louisville Public Schools it means that visiting the library is not just about checking out books. Reading is now information literacy and a library is a learning commons. Our vision is to provide the resources and space for students to create, evaluate and analyze in their studies and personal interests. During library classes and through co-instruction we are working to build the skills that students need to continuously learn and grow in this ever changing world of information and technology by focusing on four key areas outlined in the AASL Standards:
ONE...Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge. TWO...Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations and create new knowledge. THREE...Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society. FOUR...Pursue personal and aesthetic growth. Do you have 21st Century skills?
